Greely Sand & Gravel

I first met Brent Pyper, his son David and daughter Tara (the owners of Greely Sand & Gravel)) at a Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner in the fall of 2009. Eighteen months later, Brent called me "to talk marketing” and discuss my ideas to expand their residential business in Ottawa.

Challenge

During our first meeting, I learned that Brent had grown his business by doing the marketing on his own with the help of Dave and Tara. During the previous two years, more than 75% of their very modest residential marketing budget had been devoted to traditional advertising, for example street signs and ads in local newspapers like Ottawa’s Penny Saver. They did have a small website, which hadn’t been updated in several years.

Despite the fact that he had not worked with a third party marketing professional like me, he decided to invest in a new marketing and advertising plan to grow their residential business in 2011. At the time, their residential business was the smallest of their three divisions, the others being contractors and municipalities/school boards.
