Peter Kunst, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Newgate 180, first approached me to discuss his marketing in the summer of 2017. At the time, Newgate 180’s additions rehab business was being challenged by an innovative and fast-growing competitor. Peter had capacity in his centre for new clients, and was eager to hear my ideas about how to combat the competitor and dramatically improve the effectiveness of Newgate 180’s marketing.
Since the late ’90s, Peter had managed the marketing of this 45 year old non-profit addiction treatment centre largely on his own. Most of their marketing for new clients was based on direct mail, referrals from healthcare professionals and partnerships with large employers and union locals. The competitor had invested heavily in a new website, search engine marketing, and especially radio and television advertising.
